Two new high rises are underway. At left is the International Commerce Center building in Hong Kong, which will be 110 stories when completed. Scheduled to be finished in 2010, it will be Hong Kong's tallest building and the sixth highest in the world. The building was designed by Kohn Pederson Fox, and the top 15 floors will be occupied by a Ritz Carlton Hotel. The balance of the space will be office. Also recently approved is the Chicago Spire, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Its twisting exterior is meant to deflect wind. The bottom 20 floors will be a hotel and the balance will be condominiums. Deposits have already been taken for many units. The Spire is scheduled to be 150 stories tall; construction was to have started in early 2007, but
appears to now be delayed, with the developer saying that construction will start in "weeks." The total cost of the Spire is estimated at $1.5 billion.
